If you’re interested in archaeology, you might like to take a stroll around Paleopolis, the suburb of Corfu town where the original city of Kerkyra was located. There are various archaeological digs. For the more casual visitor, you can take a ‘tourist train’ at the Liston which brings you for a quick drive around Paleopolis, showing you as much of it as most people would want to see.
Palaeopolis is the core of the ancient city of Corfu and is located at the northern end of the peninsula of ‘Kanoni’. It seems that area’s history start at late 8th century. BC era of colonization of Corfu by the Corinthians and reaches the Christian era. The ruins of the early Christian Basilica of Jovian, the 5th century AD, now dominate the region. Paleopoli flourish initially during the ancient times, before the late Hellenistic period centered in the area of market and harbor. Partly, during the Roman times, this area evolved with the conservatory construction and the operation of baths.
Here the visitor finds the ‘Archaeological Museum of Paleopolis’, ruins of ‘Goddess Ira Temple’ and ruins of ‘Apollonas Temple’. Outside of the park you may visit ‘Temple of Artemis’ and ruins of the early ‘Christian Basilica’
Into the area today you can enjoy a walk into the dense flora as many locals also do. You can also bring your swimsuit and have a refreshment plunge in the small beach of Paleopolis. We must note that although the overall scenery is wonderful there is some signs of diminished maintenance.
